Assessment of: Pirates of the Caribbean, Shanghai Disney.

Questions For The Pirates Video:

1. Reaction?

Hearing the experiences of the park goers is really satisfying because it looks like the people were really immersed in the pirates fantasy that the attraction was selling. The effects being used in synchronization with the projection/video mapping was really impressive, and really helped sell that everything was working together, like with the scene were Jack and Davy Jones were fighting and it was reacting with the set around it. Overall I think it looks like a really fun dark ride, more fun than most dark rides that I've ever seen or been on.
The addition of the restaurant being near the start of the ride also adds a nice touch of atmosphere to both the restaurant and the ride, with being able to see more themed areas while inside of the ride. This also provides entertainment for people who are eating at the restaurant as well, which is always nice when taking a break.

2. What connections did you make with the ride? Discuss the elements that you connected with.

The connections that I managed to make with the ride was the aspect of selling the whole underwater theme with the entire ride, from the set dressing to the projection mapping putting us underwater. There was also the elements of practical effects being used in conjunction with the other effects. Some of the cool elements of this was the two physical pirate ships that were in the ride during the battle between the two ships, and the practical fountain effects being used to simulate cannonballs splashing into the water.
The other really cool elements that I was able to connect with was the quality of the animatronics on the ride. Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones' movements while they were animatronics were incredibly fluid for what they are, and surprising that they haven't broken down from the amount of intense movement they have to do for a repeated amount of times a day. The subtle movements of the fingers and eyes really helps sell that they're more 'alive' than your standard animatronic.
Also, for the aspects of selling the underwater feeling, the lighting was done excellently to help the riders feel very submersed in the ocean with all of the sea life floating around, as well as the Kraken showing up.

3.  What changes would you make to adapt this work into another medium? What medium would you use? What changes would you make?

If I were to change this into another medium, it would probably be the one that I'm specifically studying which is Video Game art and development.
This would mean that I'm moving it into a fully 3D medium, and would likely opt to make it a VR experience so it feels more immersive.
The changes that I would make is to obviously put the entire ride into a 3D experience with something like Unreal, and allow the 'player' to be on rails and moved along in this new environment, taking extra advantage of sound being able to be heard around the players location with a VR headset. There would be an even better opportunity for objects that occur in the ride to get up close and personal with the player as well, such as the mermaids appearing and singing a small siren song.
The other changes that I think would need to be done is to make the experience longer, and have more of a definite story ending that could be enjoyed by the player. While being a VR game it would lose the effect of being in a physical little raft and the sprays of water, the fidelity of a good game engine and excellent sound design could immerse the player just as much if not more into the world of the Pirates of the Caribbean, especially as a VR ride experience.

Black Panther Park Proposal - Cam Cook

The proposal for this theme park is as follows:

The Wakanda theme park is going to be reasonably large, with an entrance to the park mimicking the mouth of the large panther statue that's featured in the Marvel movie, Black Panther. This provides a huge landmark for people entering the park. The 'weenie' for this park is going to be the royal Wakanda palace, which is also going to be a hotel for the inner park. Stays in the hotel will be expensive, but offer gorgeous views of the park, catered hotel service, and luxury interiors that immerse you in the experience of staying in this hotel.

There are two main rides, a slow ride with no height requirements, and a thrill ride, with requirements.

The slow ride is called Spirit of the Black Panther, and offers riders a 'dark-ride' style trip through the ancestral plane of Black Panther, with beautiful colors and projection animals/animatronics. Riders are offered an immersive experience with gorgeous simulated landscapes into the ancestral plane, with the cool breeze offering the rider's some respite from the outside areas of the park.

The thrill ride is called Bast's Fury (named after the black panther goddess), and offers two loops with many twists and turns and high drops, offering riders both a thrilling experience and a wonderful view of the park from above. Photo opportunities are had when people make the first descent on the first large drop, and riders are able to buy the photo if they choose after the ride.

One of the 'shows' is going to be an act simulating the opening sequence from the Black Panther movie, showing the history of Wakanda, how the Black Panther came to be, and various cultural dances from the tribes that make up Wakanda.

Another attraction would be a safari park, where various animals, such as the White Rhino, will roam and be observable by guests.

The main traits of the park are going to be:
 - Afro-futurism
 - Community
 - Tradition

Aspects of the park are going to mimic the city of Wakanda, with various tribes that are both in the movie, not in the movie, or are only mentioned being represented in the park.

Food that is based in the park is going to be traditional meals based from the different tribes present in Wakanda, with healthy beverages being offered to people in the park (teas, water, etc) as an alternative to soda. To keep with efforts of reducing plastic waste, the park would use biodegradable products to serve on-the-go food in.
One example of a quick treat food to have in the park would be the Heart-shaped Herb Cone, which is a simple snow cone colored with butterfly pea flower (For blue) and served with a cut lime (or lemon) for the customer to drizzle onto the cone in order to have it shift to a beautiful purple/red color, much like the flower. It's flavored with honey, and topped with chopped fresh mango. No artificial colors or sweeteners.

Marketing is going to be based on Black Panther products, such as masks, clothing, accessories, plush toys, posters, and more. Beyond being a Marvel product to promote the buying of products, a deal to donate a percentage of the profits to outreach/enrichment programs could be made.  Proceeds could also be donated to endangered animal programs, to go with the safari park.

Planet - Worldbuilding!

Planet building: Main attributes of the planet.

Name: 4930-B
Size: Reasonably large, about the size of two earths.
Terrain: Large mountains and lots of medium/small islands are around.
Atmosphere color: Sea-blue green. This is determined by molecular level, what with the density of it. Blue & Green don't pass through, but Red still does.
Moons: Three moons, very large.
Rings: Yes.
Natural Soil color: Dark green/brown.
Natural Water color: Cyan, almost luminescent.

Plant Life: Planet attributes.

Thick jungle terrain and plant life. Large trees that span from the landmasses of the planet. Whatever isn't an actual landmass is a collection of plants & roots from trees and other wildlife. The climate of the entire planet is humid and hot, with lots of rainfall and other cloudy storms. The ocean plays a large role in how the landmasses are shaped, and what animals thrive on this planet. The best descriptor of this planet is that it's a heavy 'mangrove' biome, with spanning roots and little plant 'islands' that pop up occasionally.

The planet's surface is often changing due to tidal surges, storms, and tectonic activity.

Wildlife: Planet attributes.
The wildlife of this planet is going to mostly consist of creatures that either have a skin, similar to amphibians and some underwater creatures. The only furry creatures are going to exist far inland or in the tree tops. Some feathered wildlife exists, but the majority of flying creatures are going to be relegated to having webbed flying appendages, instead of feathers. The other common type of wildlife is going to have scales, similar to snakes and lizards.

Indigenous Intelligent Life: Planet Attributes.
The indigenous life that is on this planet is matriarchal.

Oz Worldbuilding - Character Concept!

For the character design assignment that we touched on in class, I've created a character named Sheamus!

"Do you happen to have any books on greenery?"

This would be something Sheamus would say if he was caught in a situation where he has to speak. Otherwise, he silently sits with his arms folded and acts intimidating.

The character's main trait is that they appear to be very very menacing, threatening, un-loyal, a bit like a hirable guard to sort of bully people around due to his intimidating size and demeanor. In truth, he's very soft and kind, and is actually very loyal to a cause that he feels is justifiable and honorable.

His 'third' trait is that he's very very impulsive, which can put him into undesirable situations and can often make him act on the wrong feeling when it's unnecessary.

As for a physical description, Sheamus is very large, and barrel shaped. His clothing is relatively well kept, but has a few cuts and scratches that show that he's actually been in a few physical situations that involve him fighting.

When Sheamus isn't busy being a hired guard or meat-shield, he likes to garden and simply take care of small plants. He also owns a small collection of plush animals.

One important article of clothing that he wears is a large helm that covers most of his face in a shroud. Not only does this make him intimidating, but also hides him from people when he's not feeling up to socializing.

Sheamus' house is something modest; Just a little farm-house that is surrounded by lots of lush plants and vegetables, due to his diet and hobby of gardening. The house has been around a very long time, and has lots of moss and ivy crawling around it, but he doesn't mind. To contrast his large size, a lot of his household items are very small.

Sheamus steps out of his house and stares eastward; he sees the big, intimidating forest that he lives near, and feels inspired. He knows that the forest is full of many dangers, but also knows its gentle secrets such as the small animals that inhabit it, or the fragile plants that grow under the bulky trees. He feels inspired to continue his garden and nurturing these small, hidden things that other people are too afraid to search for.

South of where Sheamus is, there's a small clearing of some of the massive trees, where a lovely patch of berries happens to grow. With the seasons changing, whatever is available in this patch changes. He cuts down the plants once they wither and die, and lets whatever naturally wants to pop up there appear, which he'll harvest later! Those are the only wild plants that he harvests, since most of everything else is just in his garden.

Towards the West, Sheamus simply sees the large village where he normally goes to either buy seeds for his garden, or to do his usual work of standing around and looking intimidating, or getting into a scrap because someone wanted to mess with something they shouldn't have. Looking towards the West makes Sheamus upset, because he doesn't truly want to spend his life looking intimidating, but it's the only thing he thinks he has right now because of how he looks, and is afraid of branching out from that. Sheamus is good at growing everything but himself.

Towards the North, Sheamus sees a big open field, full of opportunity and space for him to do what he really wants, which is to just farm and keep small things around him to care about! He wants to act on this dream, but is being held back by his fear of being unsuccessful because of how he appears to be.

Oz Worldbuilding Folks & Map!

The Poppy People of Northern Munchkin Country

In the northern corners of Munchkin Country, lives the Poppy People. It's an isolated collection of flower people that enjoy their isolation from the rest of the land of Oz. The wicked witch of the West would not go near the Poppy People, due to their potent abilities of putting people who get too close to sleep, similar to the deadly poppy fields that rest outside of the boundaries of the forest and emerald city.

The small village of poppy people is relatively worn down, with rustic buildings that resemble pieces of forest detritus that one can usually find when on a walk. One of the most prominent buildings is an old, overgrown skull of a Munchkin that fell prey to the poppy people years ago. Despite the fact that they are only the size of your average poppy flower, the poppy people are incredibly vicious fighters.

Some of the more notable poppy people in the village are the leaders, with an elderly poppy flower that's wilted down and hunched, but she's wiser than all the other poppies, and so she rules them and guides them. She also parlays with the Queen of Mice, to make sure no unnecessary bloodshed happens between their people.

The other leaders of the poppy people are their war champions, which are thicker poppy people who have small spines for defence. They know how to fight, so usually they don't do any sort of speaking with the delegates from other kingdoms.

Due to their ruby hue, people have always rumored that Glinda, Witch of the South, was the one that somehow blessed or created them. Here's their location on a small map, plus the munchkin skull house!
